Closing after 70 years!

Soon to be gone but not forgotten, Duk's has been in operation for just about 70 years and has announced that they will close in just a few weeks from this review on New Year's Eve 2023. The staff says they will probably reopen under new management but it will eventually become something new, plans are still being made.

We visited Duk's for a review a few years ago and to be quite honest the place was surely showing its age. There were also very preventable issues during that visit that were really not conducive to a good review and gave us considerable pause about coming back. Nonetheless here we are, if even only for the sake of nostalgia.

Today's visit was really to have one more dog sitting at the counter with friends, and to imaging how many other people has sat in the same place doing the same thing over the decades. You can just imagine what it must have been like in the 1950's to see a Thunderbird full of Greasers in leather jackets and slicked hair sitting at the bar or the tables outside with the carnival-like chaser lights flashing over their heads!!

It's time to put this old girl to bed, but at least we have one more chance to see those flashing lights before they go out for the last time. Make it there if you can!

The Experience: 7.90

THE WIENER

16 out of 20: It's a basic Vienna sausage prepared in typical fashion for a street-side hot dog stand.

THE HOT DOG

16 out of 20: This dog is a fine neighborhood option with all the right trimmings to call it the real deal.

THE SERVICE

7 out of 10: The people are friendly, the roadside counter service is basic but what more would you want?

THE VALUE

9 out of 10: Given this location the price is pretty reasonable, a dying breed really.

THE ATMOSPHERE

7 out of 10: It's a step back in time to eat here, usually in a good way.

THE LOCATION

7 out of 10: This place works for busy Ashland Avenue, it will be missed. Hopefully the new place is similar.

THE "LAGNIAPPE"

7 out of 10: Love that the fries come with the dog, apparently since 1957 according to the menu board?

THE "JE NE SAIS QUOI"

10 out of 10: We had to give Duk's a huge "something extra" score given that they are closing after 70 years :(
